Red eyes, also know as bloodshot, are a common occurrence. There are tons of causes for red eyes: infections, allergies, stress, injuries, etc. To cure a red eye, you must mind the cause behind it. For each condition, there is a specific treatment. So visiting the optometrist before you purchase medication based on your own diagnosis is highly recommended.

Symtoms of red eyes

Here are the symptoms for red eyes, followed by common causes:

The Symptoms

In our eyes, there are tiny blood vessels. Their main role is to transport blood. If some irritation or infection happens, these blood vessels get bloated and enlarge. Because their size is bigger, they become more visible and cause panic in patients. However, in most cases, the blood vessels heal on their own in a couple of days. Besides reddish eye color, other symptoms which usually accompany bloodshot eyes are:

  • Blurry vision
  • Eye fatigue or nausea
  • Itchiness and irritation
  • Pain and discomfort
  • Light sensitivity
  • Excessive dryness or watery eyes.

Dry Eyes

The most common cause of red eyes is dryness. Eyes should be hydro-balanced, be enough moist. If dryness occurs, the blood vessels become irritated and enlarged. Dry eyes can occur for a number of reasons: allergic reactions (usually to dust and pollen), unhealthy diet, damage from UV, chemical exposure, cigarette smoke, and alcohol. Sometimes, even your pillow can be the cause for dry eyes since it is extremely vulnerable to bacteria and pollen.

Conjunctivitis

You have probably faced conjunctivitis. It is an infection that causes irritation to the eye’s conjunctiva. Because one of its symptoms is red eyes, this infection is also known as pink eye. Extremely contagious, but not that dangerous, conjunctivitis is most commonly found in children. After a person has healed of this infection, it is necessary to throw any contact lenses and makeup used before, since they can still carry the infection. To avoid spreading it yourself, frequently wash your hands and avoid eye rubs.

Injury & Trauma

The blood vessels can also become irritated if the cornea or other eye part becomes damaged. This usually happens because of a physical injury. If you regularly watch sport, you might have noticed how sometimes athletes have red and swollen eyes. Eyewear protection is highly recommended during sports activities since even a scratch can do severe damage to our visual system. If your eye got red right after an injury or trauma, immediately schedule an appointment at the optometrists.
